The impact of water security on regional socioeconomic development discussed at MSU

On 20 October 2026, a scientific discussion entitled “Water Security and Problems of Regional Socioeconomic Development” was held by Nijad Narimanov, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics of Mingachevir State University (MSU).

The main purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the interrelationship between water security and regional socioeconomic development and to highlight the economic, social and environmental significance of the efficient use of water resources.

The scientific discussion examined the role of water resources in regional economic development and the challenges associated with their management. The effects of climate change, drought, the uneven distribution of water resources and growing water demand on agriculture, industry and people’s living conditions were analysed.

During the discussions, attention was drawn to the potential effects of water scarcity on agricultural productivity, food security, production costs, employment and income levels in the regions. The importance of ensuring access to water in reducing regional economic inequalities and improving social well-being in rural areas was emphasised.

Issues concerning the modernisation of water infrastructure, the reduction of losses in irrigation systems and the introduction of water-saving technologies were also addressed. The role of government regulation in water resource management, the importance of reconciling economic needs with ecological balance and the necessity of long-term planning were highlighted.

The scientific discussion underscored the need to regard water security as a key factor in protecting natural resources and determining people’s well-being and regional development opportunities. The analysis of the topic from economic, social and environmental perspectives served to promote a responsible approach to water resources and strengthen scientific approaches to regional development challenges.
