As part of the “Stories That Became Legends” project, our journey this time led us to the home of the family of martyr Gasim Mammadhasanov—to a mother’s prayers, a father’s pride, and the everlasting legacy of a young life devoted to the homeland.
This was more than a visit.
It was an opportunity to preserve the story of a devoted son as a lasting part of our nation’s collective memory.
The project is being implemented with the support of Mingachevir State University and the Sabirabad Youth House after winning the grant competition announced by the Youth Foundation of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the framework of the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty.” Its primary goal is to strengthen the spirit of patriotism among young people by sharing the life stories and sacrifices of Azerbaijan’s martyrs.
Gasim was deeply devoted to his mother.
He loved his homeland with the same devotion.
As a child, he was overjoyed when he had the opportunity to take a photograph in front of the Azerbaijani flag.
It was as if, even then, his heart was saying:
“I will dedicate my life to this flag.”
His mother says:
“I will always be proud to have a son like Gasim.”
His father proudly adds:
“Being the father of a martyr is an honor.”
Gasim Mammadhasanov was born on 18 December 2001 in Moscow.
From an early age, he was known as a diligent, ambitious, and determined young man.
He was admitted to the Azerbaijan State University of Economics with 467 admission points and graduated from the Faculty of Finance and Accounting.
Yet his life’s journey did not end with earning a university degree.
In July 2022, he began his compulsory military service.
His service started in Ganja and continued in Shusha.
He took part in military operations in the Lachin direction.
Throughout his service, he distinguished himself through discipline, courage, and dedication, and was awarded a Certificate of Honor by his military command.
On 19–20 September 2023, he fought bravely in the battles for the villages of Mukhtarkend and Dashkend in Khojaly, as well as the strategic Khach Post height near Khankendi.
It was in Khojaly that Gasim Mammadhasanov attained the highest rank of sacrifice—martyrdom.
His relatives recall that, even as a child, he would often say:
“When I join the army, I will become a martyr.”
Sometimes, words become destiny.
Gasim fulfilled that destiny in service to his homeland.
Today, martyr Gasim Mammadhasanov rests in Garagashli village, Sabirabad District.
A memorial complex has been erected in his native village to honor his life and sacrifice.
By decrees of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, he was posthumously awarded the Third Degree “For Service to the Fatherland” Order and the “For the Motherland” Medal.
We firmly believe:
Martyrs never die.
Their names are written not only into the soil they defended, but forever into the memory of their nation.
