Sustainability Committee

Overview

The Sustainability Committee at Mingachevir State University is dedicated to advancing sustainability initiatives and embedding the principles of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the university’s academic, research, and operational activities. Acting as a collaborative platform, the Committee brings together faculty, students, industry partners, and external stakeholders to promote sustainable development and generate meaningful impact at both institutional and regional levels.

In addition to its sustainability mandate, the Committee is responsible for overseeing matters related to equality, diversity, inclusion, and human rights. Operating under the guidance of the university administration, it provides advisory support and contributes to the implementation of relevant policies, programmes, and awareness-raising initiatives. Through these integrated efforts, the Committee plays a key role in fostering an inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment for all members of the university community, while reinforcing the institution’s broader commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development.

 

Mission and Objectives

The Sustainability Committee aims to:

  • Increase awareness and engagement with the SDGs within the MSU community.
  • Integrate sustainability principles into teaching, research, and campus operations.
  • Establish partnerships with national and international organizations, as well as regional enterprises, to support SDG-related initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on the university’s progress toward achieving the SDGs.
  • Organize events, seminars, and projects that promote sustainable practices and social responsibility.
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion, and human rights by supporting relevant policies, programmes, and awareness-raising initiatives across the university.

  • Foster an inclusive, equitable, and respectful campus environment by engaging students, staff, and external stakeholders in collaborative sustainability and social responsibility efforts.

Key Focus Areas

The Sustainability Committee prioritizes initiatives aligned with the university’s strategic goals, including:

  1. Quality Education (SDG 4): Enhancing educational programs to incorporate sustainability topics relevant to regional needs.
  2. Climate Action (SDG 13): Reducing the university’s environmental impact through green campus initiatives.
  3. Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17): Strengthening collaboration with the Mingachevir community, local industry, and global organizations.
  4. Gender Equality (SDG 5): Promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in academic and administrative environments.
  5. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9): Supporting research that contributes to sustainable development in energy, tourism, and industrial sectors.

Committee Structure

The Sustainability Committee consists of representatives from various university departments, including academic staff, administrative personnel, and student organizations. The Committee is chaired by a designated head and operates through specialized working groups focused on specific SDGs.

  • Green Campus Project: Implementation of waste sorting and energy-efficient systems across the university.
  • SDG Awareness Campaigns: Student conferences and seminars under the theme “Sustainable Future.”
  • Sustainability Research Grants: Internal funding support for research on regional development and the green economy.
  • Community Engagement Programs: Environmental projects in collaboration with local volunteers to protect the Mingachevir Reservoir and surrounding ecosystems.
