The future of energy: artificial intelligence, green energy and university–industry cooperation

On 20 October 2026, a series of events dedicated to Energy Workers’ Day was organised at Mingachevir State University (MSU).

Known as the city of energy, Mingachevir holds an important place in the development of Azerbaijan’s electric power system. Energy Workers’ Day commemorates the commissioning of the first power unit of the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant on 20 October 1981, at the initiative and under the leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. By an Order signed by President Ilham Aliyev on 13 October 2004, this date was established as Energy Workers’ Day in Azerbaijan. This year therefore marks the 45th anniversary of the commissioning of the power unit and the 22nd anniversary of the establishment of the professional holiday.

Given Mingachevir’s important position in the country’s energy system, the events provided an opportunity to discuss the relationship between the energy sector, urban planning and the development of modern infrastructure. In his opening address, MSU Rector Anar Eminov emphasised the strategic role of the energy sector in the national economy. He congratulated energy sector employees on Energy Workers’ Day, praised the contribution of Mingachevir’s energy workers and wished them success in their professional activities. The Rector also highlighted the importance of university–industry cooperation in training specialists who meet the requirements of the modern energy sector.

The presentations also focused on topics such as energy system management, hydrogen energy, the operation of high-voltage equipment, energy infrastructure for smart cities, energy conservation in buildings and the development of alternative energy sources. The discussions also highlighted the role of efficient energy use and green energy solutions in urban planning.

As part of the events, a group of MSU students studying energy-related disciplines received certificates of honour and gifts from Azerenerji OJSC. We express our gratitude to the management of Azerenerji OJSC for the attention and support shown to MSU students.
